peregrine soul

Cofounders Alicia Racine & Mike Fink

Peregrine Soul is a unique retreat company created to address mental wellness by combining evidence based practices with the metaphysical. Peregrine Soul is the company name for multiple retreats around the world. These retreats focus on going to spiritual centers in search of what has yet to be offered in the treatment of mental illness. Energi is a seven day retreat in Bali, Indonesia that focuses on how we relate to our body and the way we nourish it. It utilizes the mothering energy of The Island, talented spiritual practitioners, yoga, and exposure response prevention techniques to create a life changing experience.

Ojai’s retreat is called Celeste and also focuses on those who struggle with disordered eating. Celeste, a weekend retreat in Ojai, California, connects us with the deeper subconscious and the element of water. It includes authentic hot springs, a water healing treatment, and photography focusing on female archetypes. Peregrine Soul is currently discussing future retreats in places like Tanzania and Kauai.

Change happens when we are uncomfortable and an otherworldly retreat creates that environment. Change also happens holistically, therefore Peregrine Soul’s leaders seek out healers that complement what is offered in traditional treatment. This is not treatment, this is an adventure where community is formed and the self is explored.

A message from Mike & Alicia:

We believe that food is beautiful.

We believe that food is beautiful. (It’s worth saying it twice)

From its creation to its presentation, to its cultural representation and meaning in our lives, it tells a unique story from which so many things stem. A crisp niçoise salad evokes images of small Meditteranean towns and the smell of fresh lavender from Southern France. A buttery bolognese reminds us of large family meals, Italy, and maybe even an iconic film. As for our personal relationship with food there’s often a narrative of conflict, peace and resolution to be told where we assume starring and supporting roles.

We are deeply interested in exploring that relationship.

But in order to get there, we needn’t only focus on the individual. It must be taken in context and with deference for its role in society and as an expression of cultural identity. This is where the story builds its layers. It is where integration between someone’s experience of food and the terrain they knowingly or unknowingly traveled to get there, is powerful. And it’s where we believe those struggling in their relationship to food can find equanimity.

Experiencing how different cultures orient themselves around food encourages flexibility around food criteria, nudging our boundaries and creating space. This tiny space can elicit big change. Adoption is not the goal here. Rather, a shift in vantage point and the opportunity to experience something different and walk away safely in a vulnerable area of our lives that we hold sacred. Creating that room is like a breath of fresh air in an otherwise gilded cage.

Food ignites a relationship with the body that is inextricably tied. We redefine it often. Our bodies are physiologically complex but benign in one instant and in the next, we bypass the beauty of the physiology and they become uncomplicated reminders of something terribly hostile. Food is a power source, a tool for growth and repair, warmth and breathing. But we all distill this information differently. The psychology of eating is fertile ground for competing priorities and clashing interests.

We are resolute in helping find calm and direction in this landscape.

We urge you to wander outside of your spiritual comfort zone and expose yourself to a vastly different place with us so you can experience what it’s like to eat, move, listen and live with more curiosity and intention. The shift begins here. Use this to springboard relationships that will make an indelible mark on your life. Flirt with a little risk, and dive in. Change is scary, we get that. Take reassurance in knowing we are a community that has always existed, we are only just now connecting. Remember we are all travelers, and we all veer off path on occasion. That’s to be expected. It’s the willingness to re-center that’s key. Be it a retreat or a fun post, take a peek at what we’re doing from time to time, it can be incredibly centering.
